Fort Lauderdale Parks and Outdoors Travel Tips

  • Target fish for Fort Lauderdale charter boats include amberjack, barracuda, grouper, mahi-mahi, marlin, sailfish, sharks, and swordfish. One of the biggest charter companies is Fish Headquarters, which offers such specialties as night swordfishing and three-day Bahamas fishing charters. One of the friendliest and most colorful has to be Taco's Hooked Up Fishing, piloted by—whom else?—Captain Taco.
  • At the fishing piers at Anglin, Dania, Deerfield, Juno, and Pompano beaches, anglers catch cobia, croakers, mackerel, permit, snapper and snook. Pompano's rocky bottom is especially good for snapper, so if you're planning to catch-and-consume, you may want to try Pomp.
  • Tackle shops abound here, as you might guess. The most venerable is the locally owned Tuppen's Marine and Tackle on the Dixie Highway down in Lake Worth, which has been around since 1956. The biggest of them all? No surprises here: it's the huge Bass Pro Shop, west of I-95 off Griffin Road.
  • The sheer variety of sharks in the area excites the imagination of anglers and swimmers alike, though for different reasons. Sharks off Fort Lauderdale include the rare big eye threshers, black tip, bull, hammerhead, mako, and sandbar sharks.
  • Surf fishing is popular on Broward County beaches. In particular, land-based shark fishing has grown in popularity over recent years. In December 2007, two shore fishers in Vero Beach caught a 391-pound tiger shark.
  • Surf fishers land pompano here using sand fleas as bait. Other surf catches include amberjack and bluefish.

Less exposed than highly hyped Miami-Dade County, Broward County is a lot calmer and, according to some, a lot friendlier than the Magic City. In fact, a friendly rivalry exists between residents of both counties. Miamians consider themselves more sophisticated and cosmopolitan than their northern neighbors, who, in turn, dismiss the alleged sophistication as snobbery and actually prefer their own county's gentler pace.
