Key West Travel Tips

  • Ride the Yankee Freedom ferry to Dry Tortugas National Park, about 70 miles west of Key West, where you can tour historic Fort Jefferson, see dolphins and endangered sea turtles, bird-watch, and snorkel.
  • Set foot inside two famous houses: the Old Key West home where Ernest Hemingway lived and wrote and the beautifully restored Audubon House, where ornithologist John Jay Audubon stayed in the 1800s and drew birds he spotted on his visit.
  • End your day in Key West at the nightly Sunset Celebration at Mallory Square, where you'll be entertained by jugglers, magicians, and other circus-style acts.
  • Grab your swimsuit and get off at mile marker 37, about 12 miles south of Marathon, where you'll find Bahia Honda State Park and a beautiful beach that's been ranked among America's best.
  • Fly if you don't have much time. But to get a real sense of place, and see some spectacular scenery, drive the 127-mile Overseas Highway.

Key West Travel Guide

There are two schools of thought on Key West—one is that it has become way too commercial, and the other is that it's still a place where you don't have to worry about being prim, proper, or even well groomed. I think it's a bizarre fusion of both—a fascinating look at small-town America where people truly live by the (off)beat of their own drum, albeit one with a Coach outlet, Banana Republic and, most recently, Starbucks, thrown in to bring you back to reality. The locals, or "conchs" (pronounced conks), and the developers here have been at odds for years. This once low-key island has been thoroughly commercialized—there's a Hard Rock Cafe smack in the middle of Duval Street, and thousands of cruise-ship passengers descend on Mallory Square each day.   • What's the best vacation to take your teenager boys on? Hi, I'm looking for a trip to take my family of five on -- two teenage boys and one 11 year old girl. We like adventure, but not too much hiking. We like warm -- oh yeah, the trip would be during February break. We love St. John. Went to Belize last year.
