  • Wander through the winter estates of Thomas Edison and Henry Ford, located right across the Caloosahatchee River from downtown.
  • Wing it to the J.N. "Ding" Darling National Wildlife Refuge on spectacular Sanibel Island, famed for its migratory bird populations.
  • Go shelling at one of the lingering vestiges of old-Florida kitsch. The Shell Factory, in North Fort Myers, lays claim to the largest collection of seashells, sponges, and other sea life. It also has a petting zoo and a "Waltzing Waters" show.
  • Charter a boat and explore southwest Florida's unspoiled barrier islands, including North Captiva, Cayo Costa, and Gasparilla Island, which are only accessible by sea.
  • Catch some baseball with the Boston Red Sox and the Minnesota Twins, both of which call Fort Myers home for their spring training.

Historic Fort Myers has a dual mindset that perhaps can be likened to the two schools of martini drinkers—one has students who consider themselves shaken-not-stirred purists and the other has students who believe in candy-colored cocktails, the brighter and sweeter, the better.
