Orlando Parks and Outdoors Travel Tips

  • Most of the big lakes in the Orlando area belong to one of three lake chains: the Kissimmee, the Butler (or Windmere), and the Conway.
  • The top bass-fishing spot in the Kissimmee Chain, and perhaps in the entire Orlando area, is the nine-mile-long, 18,800-acre West Lake Tohopekaliga—"Toho" in local parlance. The lake hosts more than 100 fishing tournaments in a given year, and in 2006 it hosted one of the biggest, the Bassmaster Classic.
  • The 1,800-acre, sandy-bottomed Lake Conway in the south Orlando area is in reality a chain of four smaller lakes. Pollution has been a problem, but in the winter it's still a good place to sight fish spawning bass.
  • Despite what you might expect, Walt Disney World's own lakes teem with bass (real, not audio-animatronic), bluegill, and crappie. Guided catch-and-release bass fishing trips depart from most of the "on-property" resorts—just check with Guest Services at any WDW resort. Or simply fish from the shore at Fort Wilderness or Port Orleans.
  • A favorite local tackle shop is Big Toho Marina, on Lake Toho; another is Orlando Outfitters, just east of I-4 near downtown Orlando. They're known locally for their fly-fishing expertise and both offer fly-tying classes.

Orlando Travel Guide

In the beginning, Orlando may have been a sleepy little southern town filled with farmland as far as the eye could see, orange groves galore, and only two attractions to its name (a water-ski show and some great big gators). Then came the Mouse. More specifically, a mouse named Mickey and his creator, a man of fantastic imagination and vision named Walt Disney. Life in Orlando would never be the same. Since the opening of Walt Disney World back in 1971, Orlando has grown to become one of the world's top vacation destinations. Almost 49 million people from all parts of the world make their way to this city each year to sample its unending array of exciting, unique, and diverse activities. Those of us who continue to return year after year can count on each new visit to provide a host of new experiences and memories. Read More
