Biography
Johnny Molloy is a writer and adventurer based in Johnson City, Tennessee. A native Tennessean, he was born in Memphis and moved to Knoxville in 1980 to attend the University of Tennessee. It was in Knoxville, where he developed his love of the natural world that has since become the primary focus his life. It all started on a backpacking foray into the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. That first trip, though a disaster, unleashed an innate love of the outdoors that has led to his spending more than 100 nights in the wild per year over the past 25 years while backpacking and canoe-camping through the United States. Over the last 10 years, however, he has upped the ante, averaging 150 nights out per year. After graduating from UT with a degree in Economics, he continued to spend ever-increasing time in natural places, becoming more skilled in a variety of environments. Friends enjoyed his adventure stories; one even suggested he write a book. He pursued his friend's idea, and soon he had parlayed his love of the outdoors into an occupation. The results of his efforts are more than 30 books, including hiking guidebooks, camping guidebooks, paddling guidebooks, comprehensive guidebooks about specific areas, and true outdoors adventure books. Molloy has also written numerous articles for magazines and websites.
