England Travel Tips

  • Journey from old to new by strolling from London's St. Paul's Cathedral to the Tate Modern across the futuristic Millennium Bridge. Shakespeare's Globe Theatre is nearby; or, make a day of it by continuing west along the South Bank of the Thames as far as the British Airways London Eye, Big Ben, and the Houses of Parliament which are on the opposite side of the river.
  • Spend at least four or five days experiencing London's many cultural and historical attractions, but don't forget to get out and explore other parts of England including Cornwall and Dorset, the Lake District, the Cotswolds, Yorkshire, and, yes, Cambridge or Oxford.
  • York is a great option for a one- to two-night trip from London or on your way north to Scotland. Only two hours by train from London, this small and manageable city offers history dating back to Roman and Viking times, not to mention one of Europe's most impressive cathedrals.
  • The Lake District is worth the visit, though you'll be quickly disappointed if you stick to Beatrix Potter-laden gateway towns like Windemere. Get off the beaten track and stay for a week or more in a vacation rental or cottage. Or, just head east toward the Yorkshire Moors for something a little more brooding.
  • Trains and roads out of London around public holidays can get very crowded, so plan accordingly. If you're traveling by train for journeys over an hour, reserve your seat ahead of time.
