Puerto Plata Surfing Travel Tips

  • The small town of Cabarete, about 19 miles east of Puerto Plata, is the main surfing, windsurfing, and kiteboarding center of the region. It is also home to Ali’s Surf Camp, which hosts lodging and surf safari tours.
  • Encuentro is one of the best reef breaks of the north coast. Just take care: The coral is much harder to land on than sand.
  • Other popular surf spots on the north coast are Playa Caleton, Playa Grande, and Playa Preciosa, but you’ll need to rent a car or join a tour since these spots can be over an hour drive from Cabarete.
  • Winter swells in the Dominican Republic come from the north, while summer swells come from the northeast and east.
