Puerto Plata Windsurfing Travel Tips

  • Cabarete, about 19 miles east of Puerto Plata, is a major Caribbean windsurfing destination and has hosted the World Cup multiple times. Consistent eastern trade winds provide perfect side-shore breezes year-round.
  • June through September is the windiest time of year in Cabarete (with June being the windiest month), while December through April sees larger waves good for wave sailing.
  • Mornings can be a little too calm and flat for non-beginners, but afternoons are windier, peaking around 4:00 P.M., with wind speeds from 10 to 25 miles per hour.
  • Book ahead to visit during the exciting Cabarete Race Week, an international windsurfing competition that attracts the world’s top pros, held every June.
