  • Volcanic rock formations steal the show above and below the water at this geothermic island paradise. On Dominica’s south side, sites like Dangleben’s Pinnacles—submarine sea mounts heavy with marine life—take center stage, while the north side boasts overhead exploration at sites like Toucari Caves.
  • During Dominica's Dive Fest, held each July, visiting divers can get deep discounts on activities and accommodations, win prizes of dive training and equipment, join underwater photography seminars, and much more. This annual festival, hosted by the Dominica Watersports Association, is the longest running in the Caribbean.
  • Deep offshore waters make this one of only a few locations around the world where elusive sperm whales take refuge. Underwater encounters with these massive mammals are quite rare; more common are sightings of their smaller kin—pilot whales and spinner and spotted dolphins. But regular topside sightings, whether from a dedicated whale watch boat or the dive boat between dives, have earned Dominica the title of "Whale Watching Capital of the Caribbean."

The beaches aren't worth the effort to get here, but the landscape and rivers, as well as increasingly renowned scuba diving, are. Nature lovers who visit Dominica (Dom-in-ee-ka) experience a wild, rugged Caribbean setting, as well as the rural life that has largely disappeared on the more developed islands. Dominica is, after all, one of the poorest and least developed islands in the Caribbean. There are no casinos and no megaresorts—and hardly any road signs.
