Curacao Scuba Diving Travel Tips

  • The diving might not be as awe-inspiring as you'd find on neighboring Bonaire, but Curacao still has some of the Caribbean's best reef dives, including the Mushroom Forest, the Valley, Sandy's Plateau, Barracuda Point, outings with the Dolphin Academy, and Superior Producer, a 230-foot-long wreck dive.
  • National Curaçao Underwater Park offers a glimpse of some of the island's best preserved reefs. Admission to the park is U.S. $10 to $15, and serves as a great intro to the unique aquatic climate and creatures found on the island.  Also check out the Curacao Sea Aquarium for a less dive-intensive overview.
  • There are copious shore dives, but to see some of the island's best dives, hook up with an outfitter like Ocean Encounters, which offer PADI courses and are affiliated with most hotels and resorts on the island.  The island also boasts several traditional dive resorts.
  • One of the better excursion dives is a trip out to neighboring Klein Curacao, a mostly-abandoned strip of sand about 45 minutes east of the mainland.  Expect rough seas on the way out.

Curaçao (Coo-ra-sow), together with Bonaire, St. Eustatius, St. Maarten, and Saba, is in the Kingdom of the Netherlands as part of the Netherlands Antilles. Just 56km (35 miles) north of the coast of Venezuela, Curaçao, the "C" of the Caribbean's Dutch ABC (Aruba, Bonaire, and Curaçao) islands, is the most populous of the Netherlands Antilles. Visitors come for its distinctive culture, warm people, duty-free shopping, lively casinos, and watersports. Fleets of tankers head out from its harbor to bring refined oil to all parts of the world. If you want grand high-rise resorts on spectacular beaches, head for Aruba. Curaçao has a few middle-bracket resorts on the beach, mostly along the island's southern coast, but we've always found the shopping and cultural experiences here more appealing than the beaches.
