Trogir is the stuff of fairy tales and one of the most enchanting towns on the Adriatic coast, bar none. It was founded in the 3rd century B.C. by the Greeks of Issa (Vis), occupied by the Romans, and escaped destruction by invading Slavs in the 7th century. Trogir prospered and eventually became part of the Venetian fold, where it remained until Austria took over in 1797. Today's Trogir is a jewel in Croatia's crown with its postcard-perfect profile, its well-preserved stonework, and its excellent tourism infrastructure. In fact, Trogir's unique architecture, decorative stonework, and the medieval character of Old Town prompted UNESCO to add the entire town to its World Heritage List in 1997.
