Umag hits visitors in the face with its huge modern hotels, concrete beach, and banners everywhere advertising the city's annual international ATP Croatia Open tennis tournament, festivals, concerts, and even restaurants. The crowded waterfront shops look more like bus station concessions than resort boutiques, and the atmosphere shouts "vacation package deal." However, Umag does have a few bright spots. Umag's Old Town is worth some time with its leafy squares and medieval streets. The spa in the renovated Sol Umag hotel is one of the best in Croatia. In fact, the Sol Umag is surprisingly nice for large tourist accommodations.
