Tamarindo Surfing Travel Tips

  • With plenty of board rentals and surf schools in town, Tamarindo can be swamped with beginner surfers who may not know the wave riding protocol. Experienced locals often go for the bigger and usually less crowded waves in neighboring Playa Langosta.
  • Waves in the northwest Pacific region of Costa Rica are ideal from December to April (the dry season), when offshore winds combine with intense Atlantic swells to form perfect conditions.
  • Heading south from Tamarindo, there are several relatively undeveloped surf spots with a few basic cabinas catering to surfers. This area was featured in the surf flick The Endless Summer II.
  • Playa Grande, a 20-minute drive or 10-minute boat ride north of Tamarindo, is famous as a nesting site for leatherback turtles, but it's also an excellent surf spot, with offshore winds creating steep and powerful waves, especially at high tide.

About 200 miles northwest of the capital of San José, Tamarindo is a boomtown in the province of Guanacaste, in the northwest Pacific region of Costa Rica. It was once a simple hippie hangout, but now has a tangle of unplanned tourist development along the gorgeous beach. Some say the boom has been too big; however, the beach town retains its allure. It's gone from earthy to upscale in recent years, with more designer shops and cafes and more expat Americans residing full time. Tamarindo is surrounded by national parks to its north and south, and mountains with breathtaking views to its east, thus making it a major ecotourism center for ATV tours, turtle watching, diving, horseback riding, canopy tours, jungle boat rides, and rainforest hikes.
