Malpaís (or Mal País) means "badlands," and, while this may have been an apt moniker many years ago, it no longer accurately describes this booming beach area. Malpaís is a bucket term often used to refer a string of neighboring beaches running from south to north, and including Malpaís, Playa Carmen, Santa Teresa and Playa Hermosa. These beaches are long, wide expanses of light sand dotted with rocky outcroppings. This area is one of Costa Rica's hottest spots, and hotels and restaurants are opening at a dizzying pace. Still, it will take time before this place is anything like more developed destinations like Tamarindo or Manuel Antonio. In Malpaís and Santa Teresa today, you'll find a just scattering of beach hotels and resorts, miles of nearly deserted beach, and easy access to some nice jungle and the nearby Cabo Blanco Reserve.
