Crested Butte Travel Tips

  • Some say mountain biking was invented in Crested Butte. To learn about the history of the big bike, go to the Mountain Bike Hall of Fame and Museum located within the Crested Butte Mountain Heritage Museum. Events celebrating the fat tire happen throughout the summer and include national races, endurance races, and the annual Fat Tire Bike Week in June.
  • The National Forest surrounding Crested Butte contains miles of trails and five wilderness areas. Pristine, scenic, remote, rugged, and full of wildlife—that about covers it. These are remote areas with few human visitors.
  • The Crested Butte Nordic Center grooms many miles of trails near town for both skate skiing and classic Nordic-style cross-country skiing. This community-operated center also has full facilities for your needs.
  • Five minutes from Gunnison are the trails of Hartman Rocks. Names like Rattlesnake and Sea of Sage hint that this area is more like Fruita than the nearby alpine rides. Rage in the Sage is a 20-mile course sanctioned by the National Off-Road Bicycle Association. The 24 Hours in the Sage is raced here each summer.
  • Drop 1,200 feet from the canyon rim down to the Gunnison River in the pristine Gunnison River Gorge. The 4.5-mile Ute Trail has four hiker camps and a Gold Medal trout fishery. There are also several shorter routes into the Gorge.
