Gunnison Gorge National Conservation Area Parks and Outdoors Travel Tips

  • Horseback riding is permitted in the Gunnison Gorge National Conservation Area west of the Curecanti National Recreation Area. This area is managed by the Bureau of Land Management and encompasses a diverse landscape—rugged pinyon and juniper covered slopes as well as the double canyon system of the Gunnison Gorge Wilderness Area. Locals have labeled it the "adobe badlands."
  • Located in the Black Canyon of Gunnison National Park, the Gunnison Gorge National Conservation Area consists of almost 60,000 acres. Think of horseback riding as your transportation back in time, when outlaws roamed the west and horses were sometimes their only friends.
  • If you would like to horseback ride in the area and do not have your own horse, there are various outfitters and guided trips available. Check with the National Park Service or the Bureau of Land Management for current recommendations.
  • The Deadhorse Trail on the North Rim is the only area open to horses or pack animals for day use and recreational riding in the Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park. No permit is required.
