Aspen Travel Tips

  • In summer and fall, head south out of town over Independence Pass for sweeping vistas and otherworldly aspen stands. The road is closed from October through May due to avalanche danger.
  • ESPN brings its extreme-sports fest, the X Games, to town the first weekend in February. Events are broadcast live and are free to attend, but book your hotel early.
  • Not a skier? Not a problem. You can still ride the gondola to the top of Aspen Mountain (aka, "Ajax") and have lunch at Sundeck Restaurant while looking out on the 14,156-foot Maroon Bells.
  • Don't overlook Snowmass, 15 miles to the northwest, which now competes with downtown Aspen thanks to a $1 billion base village development completed in 2009.
  • Visit one of the 19th-century landmarks built by Jerome Wheeler. The former owner of Macy's in New York is responsible for two of Aspen's marquee buildings—the Hotel Jerome and the Wheeler Opera House.
  • Learn from the experts at Montagna, the five-star restaurant located in The Little Nell hotel. Executive Chef Ryan Hardy runs his own organic farm whose produce winds up in many of his dishes, while sommeliers Jonathan Pullis and Dustin Wilson use their expertise to help diners find the perfect wine for their meal.
