  • South Fork is located where the Rio Grande River emerges from the San Juan Mountains and joins with its south fork on the western side of the San Luis Valley. Think of rushing crystal clear mountain water—these two rivers are a match made in mountain, spring-run-off heaven.
  • Anglers love this area because there are 47 tributaries and 500 miles of fishing streams between South Fork and the headwaters of the Rio Grande. There are 13 lakes, accessible by car or short hikes, within 20 minutes of town. The weather is mild, the sky is mostly clear, and the views are amazing.
  • Area fly shops and guide services offer guided float trips, wade trips, and fly-fishing lessons on the Rio Grande near Creede and South Fork. Have the locals do all of the work if you can, or learn something new in the process.
  • Brown trout, rainbow trout, brookies, and Rio Grande cutthroat are all found in the many waters around South Fork. These are wild species that don't adapt quietly to an expertly tied fly.
  • Spring, summer, fall, and winter are all good times to fish. Local guides say that fall, particularly mid-September through mid-October, is the best time to fish. The crowds are also gone at this point, which increases your chances of being able to enjoy the solitude.
