Cartagena Sailing Travel Tips

  • One of the best places to dock and keep your boat while in Cartagena is at Club Nautico, in the Manga neighborhood, a few minutes stroll from the center of the city. It was founded by an Australian and Colombian duo.
  • Many visitors take their boats to the San Blas Islands, off the eastern coast of Panama (which was once part of Colombia). It's great for scuba diving, swimming, and other water activities, and is a decent excursion for a few days. Boats can also be chartered there from Club Nautico and other companies.
  • The Colombian Coast Guard is particularly vigilant in Cartagena, making this one of the safest places to leave your boat.

Founded by the Spanish in 1530s, Cartagena is among the oldest of beach resorts in the Americas. The early history of the city includes many grim acts—gold exportation, slavery, sugar production, and piracy—but through all this an architectural legacy began that made Cartagena one of the most important historical gems of the continent. Colonial churches, cobblestone streets, long seafront walkways, and other ancient treasures abound in the old walled city.
