Cartagena Beach Travel Tips

  • The beaches surrounding Cartagena are ideal for family vacations. The waters are calm and tranquil because of the geography of the area: With various peninsulas curving inland, much of the beach is protected from open water.
  • Like any beach resort, the beaches closer to the main city and the high rise hotels are always crowded. As an alternative, take a boat excursion to the Rosario Islands for a day.
  • Most of the beaches surrounding Cartagena have brown sand, due to the color of the rocks which produce the sand. For white sand beaches, head to the Rosario Islands or Playa Blanca, which literally means, "white beach."

Founded by the Spanish in 1530s, Cartagena is among the oldest of beach resorts in the Americas. The early history of the city includes many grim acts—gold exportation, slavery, sugar production, and piracy—but through all this an architectural legacy began that made Cartagena one of the most important historical gems of the continent. Colonial churches, cobblestone streets, long seafront walkways, and other ancient treasures abound in the old walled city.
