Canary Islands Beach Travel Tips

  • With little rainfall and water temperatures roughly between 65 and 75 degrees year-round, the beaches of the Canary Islands lure visitors during any season.
  • Winter holidays are the most crowded time at the beaches, as are the summer months of July and August, and Carnaval season in February or March.
  • Crime isn’t a huge problem on the islands, but take care not to leave your things unattended on the beach, especially at the busy Playa de las Canteras in Las Palmas on Gran Canaria Island.
  • The islands are peppered with a number of volcanic black sand beaches that are gorgeous, but can be burning hot during the summer months.

The Greek writer Homer called them Elysium—the place of an idyllic afterlife—and the Romans gave them the name Fortunate Islands. Not that long ago, these seven islands and six islets, just 60 miles off the coast of northwest Africa, were some of the poorest parts of Spain, but now they overflow with touristic prosperity. Like a European Hawaii, the Canary Islands are a group of volcanic isles with near-perfect weather and dramatic scenery: from deep gorges to black sand beaches to Pico del Teide (the highest mountain in Spain).
