Canada Gay and Lesbian Travel Tips

  • Don't bite off more of Canada than you can chew. Like trying to see all of the United States in one trip, seeing more than two or three spots at a time in Canada is pointless. Each city is its own destination.
  • Be Canadian: Be Polite. Whether they admit it to you or not, Canadians see Americans as assertive and curt. Be sure to always say please, thank you, and excuse me, and be careful about speaking your mind too forcefully.
  • Throw your French out the window. You may be proud of your college French, but understanding the Quebecois dialect can be mind-boggling to the uninitiated. Having said that, most of Canada is bilingual, and reading French can help you get by. And Canadians can understand your French even if you can't understand theirs.
  • Don't expect much of a queer scene outside of the major cities. Despite Canada's liberalism, its hinterlands are pretty much devoid of anything gay, and some cities like Calgary and Ottawa don't have much of a scene at all.
  • Be prepared for the Canadian winter. If you think Minneapolis or Chicago can be freezing around Christmas, wait until you've experienced Canada. On the flip side, you’d be hard-pressed to find better skiing than in Whistler (British Columbia), Banff (Alberta), or Mount Tremblant (Quebec).
