  • Just a half-mile from the Devils Postpile rock formation lies Devils Postpile Campground, the only camp in the area managed by the National Park Service. The 21-site camp has flush toilets and running water. It is ideally situated for hikes within the monument and for fishing in the Middle Fork San Joaquin River.
  • The Middle Fork San Joaquin River cuts through the center of Devils Postpile National Monument. It is one of the Eastern Sierra's most beautiful waterways, and one of the few places in the Sierra Nevada where anglers can catch a grand slam—four species of trout in one day. The river supports a healthy population of rainbow, brown, brook, and golden trout.
  • Several sites at Minaret Falls Campground have head-on views of Minaret Falls. The sound of water from the Middle Fork San Joaquin River, which flows past the camp, will lull you to sleep. Anglers can fish to their heart's content. With a half-mile walk you can catch the Devils Postpile shuttle bus and travel wherever you wish in the monument.
  • Agnew Meadows is the first in a string of campgrounds that are reached by descending from Minaret Pass into Devils Postpile National Monument. The camp is popular because of its location just off the Pacific Crest Trail. The main trailhead here leads to a wide choice of day hikes and backpacking trips. If you'd rather let Trigger do the walking, a pack station is located nearby.

Just a few miles outside Mammoth Lakes, Devils Postpile National Monument is home to one of nature's most curious geological spectacles. Formed when molten lava cracked as it cooled, the 60-foot-high, blue-gray basalt columns that form the postpile look more like an enormous, eerie pipe organ or a jumble of string cheese than anything you'd expect to see made from stone. The mostly six-sided columns formed underground and were exposed when glaciers scoured the valley during the last ice age, some 10,000 years ago.
