Napa Valley Parks and Outdoors Travel Tips

  • Aboard the Wine Train's lavishly restored early-20th-century Pullman cars, passengers experience the luxury of a bygone era. As the train rolls past Napa Valley wineries, riders relax in velvet-cushioned armchairs and enjoy a gourmet meal. Some excursions stop at wineries for private tours and tastings.
  • About an hour north of Napa, one of California's most famous trains chugs its course from Willits to Fort Bragg, crossing the Noyo River and tunneling through the towering coastal redwoods. More than 800 trips per year are offered on the Skunk Train, which follows the route of an 1885 logging railroad.
  • Train aficionados should head east of Napa to the town of Woodland and the Sacramento River Train, where they can relive California history as they roll along the Sacramento River. The 32-mile trip lasts about three hours. The open-air observation cars are the most popular seats in summer.
  • The Western Railway Museum in Suisun offers visitors the chance to ride restored electric trains and historic streetcars that have been in service all over California and the western United States. With a single admission ticket, you can ride the short tracks all day, as often as you wish. Fifty different streetcars are on display in the museum.

Napa Valley Travel Guide

California's Napa and Sonoma valleys are two of the most famous wine-growing regions in the world, and two of my favorite places to visit in the state. In fact, I liked Napa so much that I moved there. The valleys that provide a way of life for thousands of vintners are also the ultimate retreat for wine and food lovers and romantics. Hundreds of wineries are nestled among the vines, and most are open to visitors. Even if you're a teetotaler, the country air, rolling countryside, and world-class restaurants and spas are reasons enough to visit. If you can, plan to spend a couple of days just to get to know one of the valleys. No matter how long you stay, you'll probably never get enough of the romantic, indulgent way of life. It requires stamina, though; eating and drinking to excess can seriously wear you down, unless you're regularly gluttonous. Read More
