Dead Mountains Wilderness Parks and Outdoors Travel Tips

  • There are no established trails in the Dead Mountains Wilderness, although many routes have been worn into the ground by wild burros and bighorn sheep. One such path to Red Spring leads across open bajadas (the broad slope at the base of a hill or mountain) and up sandy washes to a life-saving water source. This is inhospitable country, so be sure that you and your horse are well equipped for desert travel.
  • Picture Canyon, named by frontiersman Jedediah Smith during his 1826 exploration, is the Dead Mountains' museum of Native American art. More than 500 petroglyphs can be seen on dark granite boulders near the canyon's spring. Rock shelters and bedrock mortars can also be found. The six-mile-long canyon is accessible off the Mojave Road.
  • Heading south from Needles, neighboring Turtle Mountains Wilderness has three springs that can be visited on horseback or on foot: Coffin, Mohawk, and Mopah. Mopah is the most scenic, with a small cluster of fan palms, a dependable water source, and excellent birding opportunities.
  • If you are going to travel with Trigger, you'll need a place to spend the night. Black Canyon Equestrian Campground in Mojave National Preserve is the nearest horse-friendly camp. Rangers at the Hole-in-the-Wall visitor center across the road can help you choose the best trails for riding.
