  • The ancient volcanic plug of Morro Rock rises 581 feet above Morro Bay harbor. The geologic icon of the Morro Bay coastline, the rock is also the home of nesting Peregrine Falcons. Best birding is October through March.
  • A critical stop over on the Pacific Flyway, Morro Bay and its 48,000-acre watershed are among the top 10 spots in the U.S. for variety and sheer number of birds, especially in winter. More than 200 species have been counted in a single day.
  • The Morro Bay Winter Bird Festival is held every January on the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend. Participants take part in half-day and all-day birding tours, workshops, and classes. One of the most popular events is the "Big Day," when birders go on a marathon field trip to try to see as many species as possible.
  • In the spring months, the heron and egret rookery in the eucalyptus grove at Morro Bay State Park is a popular attraction. Year-round, the park's Museum of Natural History is a great birding resource, and boasts a spectacular vantage point above the bay.
