  • The Turkey Vulture may not be the prettiest bird around, but that doesn't stop birders from celebrating its virtues at the annual Kern Valley Turkey Vulture Festival, held every autumn during the peak of the migration. Kern Valley is one of the two largest turkey vulture migration sites in North America.
  • Weldon's Kern River Preserve is rich with birds year-round, but in the summer months it is a mecca for hummingbirds. Visitors can watch as dozens of Rufous and Anna's hummers sip nectar from feeders at preserve headquarters. Black-chinned, Costa's, Calliope, and Allen's Hummingbirds also make an appearance, making it possible to see as many as five or six species in one day.
  • California's largest nesting population of summer tanagers can be seen at the Kern River Preserve. The tanagers are often seen or heard near preserve headquarters or on the nature trail. The bright-red males are easily spotted near the tops of the tallest cottonwood trees.
  • Camp 9 is found to the east of Kernville on Sierra Way, along the shores of Lake Isabella. Wintering Bald Eagles are easy to spot from the campground. Roadrunners and Rock Wrens can be seen alongside Sierra Way, often from your car window.
