Los Angeles Travel Tips

  • Watch out for "June Gloom" and "the Santa Anas." Two L.A.-specific weather phenomena are the fog banks and overcast skies that can hang around for days in June (actually, it can happen anytime from March to August), and the Santa Ana winds that can make you feel like Dorothy in Kansas. Summer in general can also be very hot—especially in the Valley—and it's also peak tourist season.
  • Join a live studio audience. Probably the only way you'll actually see a celebrity in L.A. is by seeing a TV show being taped. Tickets are free and are sometimes handed out on Hollywood Boulevard or at Universal City. You can also get them at www.tvtickets.com.
  • Ride the movies at Universal Studios.
  • Whether recreating with kids, the dogs, or with your buddies, the L.A. area promises adventure for everyone. Mountain-biking trails, day-hike trails, beaches, and camping spots await those looking for an escape from the city.
  • Try a sit-on-top sea kayak in the bay or open ocean at Southwind Kayak Center. Rentals are available in Newport Beach and Dana. The center also conducts guided outings and offers weekend instructional classes.
  • Avoid downtown. Unlike most cities, there's really not much to do in downtown Los Angeles for tourists. Stick to more interesting locales, like the beach boroughs and Hollywood.
  • Watch surfers jockey for the best waves from historic Santa Monica Pier. While there, ride the roller coaster or check out visiting performers.
  • Get morbid on Dearly Departed: The Tragic History Tour of Los Angeles. This three-hour tour visits the scenes of the Manson murders and drives by the places where stars like Frank Sinatra and River Phoenix met their ends.
  • Spend an afternoon wining and dining on the terrace of the J. Paul Getty Museum on Sepulveda Pass above the city. Works of art and sunken gardens meet sunset views and events drawings L.A.'s well-heeled denizens.

Los Angeles Travel Guide

Like Las Vegas, the allure of L.A.—for better or for worse—is undeniable. Los Angelenos know their city will never have the sophisticated style of Paris or the historical riches of London, but they cheerfully lay claim to living in the most entertaining city in the United States, if not the world. It really is warm and sunny most days of the year, movie stars actually do live and dine among the commoners, and you can't swing a cellphone without hitting a roller-blading blonde at the beach. • I am going with a friend in January for a week to visit Hollywood, Cali, etc. I have been looking at places to stay that are in West Hollywood areas that are very reasonable. I just found a condo on here for very cheap nightly Rentals. Do you think I can trust the vacation condos and apartments on here, or should I just use a hotel?
