Palm Springs Travel Tips

  • It's touristy, but if you go to Palm Springs, you must visit the World's Biggest Dinosaurs gift shop. The attraction, in Cabazon off I-10, consists of two three-story-tall concrete dinos—a Tyrannosaurus rex and a brontosaurus—and takes no more than 30 minutes out of your day.
  • Try your luck at one of the many casinos here in "Monte Carlo West." They offer slots, card rooms, and sports books.
  • Tee off at SilverRock Resort in La Quinta, host of the annual Bob Hope Classic pro-am golf tourney. The course's three 600-plus-yard par 5 holes will test even the biggest hitters.
  • Thrift-store shop at one of the many boutique vintage stores lining Palm Canyon Drive.

Palm Springs Travel Guide

Palm Springs had been known for years as a golf course-studded retirement mecca, invaded annually by hordes of libidinous college kids on spring break. Well, the city of Palm Springs has been quietly changing its image and attracting a whole new crowd. The late former mayor Sonny Bono's revolutionary "anti-thong" ordinance in 1991 halted the spring-break migration by eliminating public display of the bare derrière, and the upscale fairway-condo crowd now congregates in the outlying resort cities of Rancho Mirage, Palm Desert, Indian Wells, and La Quinta.
