Fernando de Noronha Beach Travel Tips

  • Due to its close proximity to the equator, Fernando de Noronha is always sunny, and can be humid during the summer. November is the sunniest month of the year and also one of the driest. The water is the clearest for swimming and other beach sports when there is a lack of rain. During the rest of the year there can be a lot of rain, particularly in July and August.
  • Unlike other beaches throughout Brazil, being in the center of it all in Fernando de Noronha doesn't mean you're in the center of crowds. Only a few thousand live on the main island and crowds are strictly limited by the government's environmental department.
  • Many visitors combine a beach trip to Fernando de Noronha with visits to other parts of Brazil. Most flights to the island originate in Recife, the capital of the state of Pernambuco, where many visitors spend time.
  • The islands of Fernando de Noronha are difficult to reach from the United States and Canada. You will make a minimum of three flight connections and you'll need to take a boat from the mainland—plan this into your timing.
  • The beach at Baía dos Golfinhos offers the best place to view dolphins. Arrive at sunrise, bring binoculars, and watch from the cliffs. You can visit on your own or with Atalaia Turismo. The nonprofit group Projeto Golfinho Rotador provides information about the dolphins.
  • Many areas of the island are off limits to random independent travelers and can only be visited with official tour companies. While this clearly adds to the cost of a trip, it also helps the government limit the amount of visitors to protected areas.

Beach Overview: Fernando de Noronha, Brazil

Few travelers get to visit—or even know about—Fernando de Noronha, a spectacular group of 21 islands about 200 miles off the coast of northern Brazil's Pernambuco state. Only one island is inhabited, the volcanic Fernando de Noronha, from which the group of islands takes its name. The Portuguese first discovered the islands at the very beginning of the 1500s and for centuries they were fought over by the British, French, and Dutch. Today, the government strictly regulates tourism in order to protect the island: Only a few hundred visitors are allowed on the island at any given time. Read More
