Bonaire Windsurfing Travel Tips

  • Bonaire's only professional athletes are windsurfers--and with good reason.  The island receives near-constant winds, and the calmer seas around most of the coast make for epic conditions.
  • Beginners should start a Lac Bay, where shallow water and steady onshore winds yield excellent conditions for all levels.  Two outfitters—Jibe City and Bonaire Windsurf Place—are based here.  A two-hour lesson (which runs around $50 U.S.) will have you up and sailing.
  • Propel through the water from December to August, when winds are strongest. Gentle breezes prevail from September to November.

Bonaire Travel Guide

Unspoiled Bonaire is only gently touched by development. Although your options range from bird-watching to doing nothing, Bonaire is foremost a scuba diver's delight and also offers some of the Caribbean's best snorkeling. This sleepy island doesn't attract crowds and has none of Aruba's glitzy diversions except for a few small casinos with minor action.
