Bonaire Beach Travel Tips

  • The island's position below the hurricane belt assures year-round warm water and optimal water-sport conditions.
  • Bonaire is undeniably one of the best diving destinations in the Western Hemisphere, thanks in large part to the Bonaire Marine Park, which was established over 20 years ago. As a result of the park's environmental stewardship, the reefs surrounding the island are some of the Caribbean's healthiest and most prisitine.   The park itself covers the water surrounding the island, as well as the dive sites off the coast of Klein Bonaire.  A $25 annual entry fee for divers (or $10 for snorkelers and other water-sports) goes toward the future protection of the reef.
  • Most of the dive sites are directly off the shore, or around Klein Bonaire, with a maximum depth of around 100 feet; there's plenty to see while skimming the surface, and the water's Visine-clear visibility keeps things in focus.
  • Wear fins that require booties (or carry some extra footwear); the shore entry to many of the sites typically require walking on very rough terrain.
  • Bonaire's only professional athletes are windsurfers—and with good reason.  The island receives near-constant winds, and the calmer seas around most of the coast make for epic conditions.
  • There aren't as many traditional tropical beaches as you might find on other Caribbean islands, but a laid-back vibe and some of the most diverse aquatic life on the globe within close proximity to the shore make up for the lack of sandy stretches of waterfront.

Bonaire Travel Guide

Unspoiled Bonaire is only gently touched by development. Although your options range from bird-watching to doing nothing, Bonaire is foremost a scuba diver's delight and also offers some of the Caribbean's best snorkeling. This sleepy island doesn't attract crowds and has none of Aruba's glitzy diversions except for a few small casinos with minor action. Instead, turquoise waters beckon travelers to discover colorful clouds of tropical fish. Come here for the diving, not the beaches. Read More
