  • Freely use English. Even if you speak perfect French, many of Brussels' residents speak fluent English and will answer you in it. English is a seen as a politically neutral language between the often-competing Flemish east and French west of the country.
  • Watch your kisses! Single, double, and triple social cheek kissing is confusing enough in Europe, but in Belgium it's even trickier. You usually kiss once for people your same age, but three times for people older than you as a sign of respect. How much older? That can be the tricky part! Usually ten years older, but how can you be sure of anyone's age? Straight men don't kiss other straight men until they know each other well, but women are freer to pucker up to new acquaintances.
  • Drink beer. Alcohol can be pricy in Brussels' clubs, so imbibe in the cheaper local tap beers. More than 400-plus varieties of rather strong brew come from more than 100 local breweries—from fruit-infused types to flat types to awfully sour types. Don’t leave without downing the triple-fermented "Dulle Teve." translated as "Mad Bitch!"

Of all the romantic, spellbinding cities in Europe, poor little Brussels has a rather boring reputation of being the generic land of "eurocrats" who run the bureaucracy of the European Union and NATO, as this Belgian capital is also the capital to both of those monolithic institutions. Transatlantic jaunts to Rome or Paris may be sexy, but rarely do travelers head directly to Brussels—unless specifically on business.
