  • Embrace your inner thrill seeker. Devil's Backbone, off the north border, is a shallow reef replete with colorful fish and coral.
  • Find the Bahamas' best on the west side of the island. Current Cut is a major feeding ground for marine life.
  • Launch your snorkeling adventure from a number of beaches, but avoid dangerous reefs and tricky tides at Tay Bay and Lighthouse.
  • Stay awhile—day-long snorkeling trips cost about US$45 per person, gear included.

Eleuthera Travel Guide

A sort of Bahamian Plymouth Rock, Eleuthera Island (pronounced Ah-leu-thra) was the first permanent settlement in The Bahamas, founded in 1648. A search for religious freedom drew the Eleutherian Adventurers from Bermuda here, to the "birthplace of The Bahamas." The long narrow island they discovered and colonized still bears the name Eleuthera—Greek for "freedom." The locals call it Cigatoo. Read More
