Perth Surfing Travel Tips

  • Perth has an excellent public transport system, with frequent buses serving the beaches. Buses allow passengers to carry surfboards as long as they are not over four feet in length.
  • Trigg Beach in Perth's suburbs is a popular surf spot and surfer hangout, with reliable swells and a reef break off shore—just be wary of riptides. Trigg Beach is also home to the Western Australia Surf School, where visitors can take lessons.
  • Rottnest Island, a popular weekend resort 12 miles off the coast, also has several reef breaks, the most famous being Strickland Bay.
  • Visiting surfers will probably want to make the three–and-a-half hour sojourn south to Margaret River, considered the surf capital of Western Australia. The world-class break, Surfers Point, is legend in these parts.

Said to be one of the remotest cities in the world and closer to Singapore than to Sydney, Western Australia's Perth is both urbane and mellow. With a population of 1.5 million (over three-quarters of Western Australia's inhabitants) and built on mineral wealth, the city enjoys a perfect setting along the Swan River and Indian Ocean. Emphasis is on the outdoors in this area, with a coastline of excellent beaches in an almost continuous line from Cottesloe in the south to Quinns Rocks in the north, including a popular section called the Sunset Coast. The temperate year-round Mediterranean climate means plenty of beach days, and Perth is said to enjoy more hours of sunshine than any other major Australian city. Read More
