Whitsunday Islands Sailing Travel Tips

  • The Whitsundays are a major destination for bareboating—do-it-yourself charter sailboats. You do not need a license, and sailing is surprisingly easy in these uncrowded and calm waters. Companies give you a debriefing before you head out and periodically check in with you via radio, but if you are nervous about sailing, you can hire a skipper (Prosail being one of the recommended companies).
  • Most charters have mandatory week-long rental requirements during winter peak season, but other times of the year three-night charters are available.
  • Shute Harbour and Airlie Beach, on the Australian mainland close to the Whitsundays, have the best selection of charters in the region.

Australia has its very own Tahiti in the form of the 74 islands that make up the Whitsundays, off the coast of Queensland. About an hour's flight south of Cairns, the island group is tight-knit, with no more than three nautical miles separating each isle. Only eight of the Whitsunday Islands are inhabited and all but four are national parks. They are a classic tropical paradise of unspoiled forests and shining white, empty beaches, all surrounded by the superlative World Heritage Area of The Great Barrier Reef.
