  • Manly, north of Sydney’s center, is actually home to a chain of surf beaches that include Queenscliff, North and South Steyne, Freshwater, Shelley, and Fairy Bower. All are perfect for a variety of skill levels, and local world surfing champion Layne Beachley stages the Beachley Classic in Manly each October.
  • At Bondi Beach, if you walk along the cliff path to Bronte, there is a reef at the south end that produces solid rights, and there’s a beach break at the north end as well.
  • First timers can take one-hour to four-day surf lessons at the Sydney North Surf School in Narrabeen, the beachside suburb of northern Sydney. Waves are consistent here, and lessons are especially friendly to kids and families.
