Visitor Information

Description:
Content by Frommers

If we lived in Gothenburg, we'd make seasonal visits here, coming in February for the camellias, in March and April for the orchids, or in July for the giant waterlilies that burst into bloom. Most definitely we'd show up in early July and again in late August when the roses are at their peak. Located across the canal from the Central Station, this park boasts a large rosarium that flourishes with about 4,000 rose bushes and about 19,000 other species. The park's centerpieces include the Palmhuset (Palm House), a fanciful and ornate greenhouse dating to 1876 (whose design was inspired by London's Crystal Palace, which was built as part of London's World Exhibition) maintained at subtropical temperatures even in the depths of winter; and a butterfly house containing beautiful butterflies that flutter through a simulation of a natural habitat. The city of Gothenburg sometimes hosts exhibits, concerts (sometimes during the lunch hour), and children's theater pieces in the park.
