Arkansas Overview
Once on the eastern edge of the American frontier, Arkansas was once a rough-and-ready territory comprised of plantations and settlements of poor immigrants from nearby Appalachia. The Civil War brought an end to slavery, but racial tensions remained until desegregation was forced on the state in 1957. Industrialization improved the economic plight of residents somewhat during the same time period. Today, the Natural State is best known for its fabulous outdoor recreational opportunities, exceptional hot springs, and glorious mountain scenery. For history buffs, there are many sites and attractions dealing with the civil rights movement, rural Ozark mountain culture, and Bill Clinton (who remains a favorite son, whether he inhaled or not). All in all, the state offers a good deal of varietyand a lot of good value.
