Grand Canyon Travel Tips

  • Catch the views of the canyon and the Painted Desert from the Watchtower.
  • To plan your trip, start with the Backcountry Permit Planner, available on the park's website and by mail. The guide has many tips for an enjoyable trip, and it tells you how to obtain a backcountry permit, required for all overnight camping excursions.
  • A big advantage of rafting the Grand Canyon is that you have the opportunity to hike many beautiful side canyons that you cannot easily reach from the rims. Some tours, especially in the spring, add on extra days for hiking.
  • For many, the Grand Canyon views alone are worth the price of admission. But adventurers shouldn't be satisfied with mere looking. Hiking down below the rim, float through the Colorado River's alternating series of hair-raising rapids and cathedral-still quiet water, or marvel at the touch of two-billion-year-old rock under your fingers.
