Coconino National Forest Horses and Riding Travel Tips

  • Hitchin’ Post Stables leads rides through Walnut Creek Canyon and offers horseback and horse-drawn wagon rides complete with barbecue at sunset. In winter, visitors can take a sleigh ride through Coconino National Forest.
  • Granite Mountain Stables is located in nearby Prescott. They offer guided daily horseback rides. Hay wagon rides for groups are also available.
  • Trail Horse Adventures located on Lower Red Rock Loop Road has many options including full moon rides, Oak Creek swim, and picnic rides.
  • There are several multi-use trails in the Volcanic Highlands, home to San Francisco Peaks. These include trails such as the easy Waterline Trail, the moderate Kachina Trail #150, and the strenuous O’Leary Trail.
  • If you want to avoid the hustle and bustle of Flagstaff, try the Arizona Trail #87c Equestrian Bypass. This segment of trail was designed to give horseback riders an alternative route and safe way to cross US 40. The views are spectacular.
  • Little Elden Springs Horse Camp is a special campground designed only for people with horses. Located only five miles north of Flagstaff on US 89, the camp has easy access for horse trailers and a trail connects the camp to a system of riding trails.
