Lake Powell Parks and Outdoors Travel Tips

  • At Lake Powell, primitive camping is allowed anywhere along the shore outside developed areas and can be accessed by boat, foot, or road—depending on the area. Campers must pack out all trash and must have a portable toilet or toilet facilities on their vessel. Water levels of the lake determine which areas are available for camping, but an average of 150 miles of shoreline camping is usually available.
  • Bullfrog Campground is near one of Lake Powell's busiest marinas and has both a large, developed campground with 78 sites—that include all amenities—as well as primitive camping areas with no facilities except pit toilets. Make sure you check on the water levels because if the water level is too low, closures may occur in the primitive camping areas.
  • Lake Powell is ideal for both shoreline and boat fishing. Smallmouth bass, bluegill, crappie, catfish, and walleye are the most common catches in the area.
  • The Hole-in-the-Rock Road is a 62-mile, one-way adventure starting east of Escalante off of UT 12 and ending at Hole-in-the-Rock at Lake Powell. This dirt road follows the 1879 pioneer expedition that carved the famous Hole-in-the-Rock, allowing a wagon train and cattle to proceed to the Colorado River. The route features the Devil's Garden, Dance Hall Rock, Forty Mile Spring, and many trailheads into the canyons. A two-wheel-drive vehicle is fine in dry weather, but you will need a four-wheel-drive vehicle if you will be traveling on any of the side roads.

Lake Powell and Glen Canyon Travel Guide

This huge canyon is a spectacular wonderland of stark contrasts—parched desert, deep blue water, startlingly red rocks, rich green hanging gardens. A joint effort by man and nature, Lake Powell and Glen Canyon National Recreation Area is a huge water park, with more shoreline than the West Coast of the continental United States. It's also a place of almost unbelievable beauty, where millions of visitors each year take to the water to explore, fish, water-ski, swim, or simply lounge in the sun. Read More

  • I plan to drive from Las Vegas to Lake powell this July and one of my passengers is afraid of being on roads that are close to high drop-offs with no guardrails. I am not familiar with this route and hope someone can tell me if there are many such areas or if the trip will be mostly flat. Any help will be appreciated. David
