Tucson Camping Travel Tips

  • Bog Springs Campground, located in the Madera Canyon, is open year round. There are 13 campsites, and you may be lucky and get a terraced site. Drinking water is available but you will need to bring in your own firewood. There are some excellent views of the Santa Rita Mountains and world-famous bird watching is available right at the campsite. Three trails begin at the campground.
  • Located only minutes from Tucson, Catalina State Park campground has 120 sites available, 95 with water and electric hookups. Two group areas and an equestrian center for off-loading or camping with horses are also available. Reservations are needed only for the group sites, which can be reserved up to six months in advance. Catalina State Park is located in the Coronado National Forest and offers hiking, biking, horseback riding, birding, and wildlife viewing.
  • More than 30 campgrounds within the Coronado National Forest (adjacent to Tucson) offer some excellent camping. In the Santa Catalina Mountains you will find the following campgrounds: Spencer Canyon, Rose Canyon, Molino Basin, Gordon Hirabayashi, Peppersauce and General Hitchcock.
  • There are nearly 100 primitive camping spots along the roads within the Buenos Aires National Refuge. Make sure you bring plenty of water. To spot the sites look for the brown signs indicating camping access along the road.

Tucson also has a long history that melds Native American, Hispanic, and Anglo roots. And with a national park, a national forest, and other natural areas just beyond the city limits, Tucson is a city that celebrates its Sonoran Desert setting. Read More
