Mar del Plata Kiteboarding Travel Tips

  • Mar del Plata's Kite Beach is about three miles south of the town center, off Las Colinas de Peralta Ramos, shortly after the main city port.
  • In the summer, the best winds come from the northeast after 1:00 P.M., traveling up to 23 miles an hour, but only a few days a week. In the winter, the wind comes from the south and southeast.
  • The Carilo kiteboarding area is near where Calle Roble hits the beach. Summer winds come from the northeast at 13 to 22 miles per hour, and from the southeast in winter. Carilo is considerably less crowded than Mar del Plata.

Mar del Plata has been Argentina's favorite beach resort for more than a century. Historically, it was almost exclusively for the very wealthy—many former summer mansions still exist amidst the ubiquitous high rises. By the 1950's, with Juan and Evita Peron in power, a more egalitarian resort town developed: Unions built summer retreats, completely changing the makeup of the town. Today, the town is largely a middle-class resort that receives nearly eight million visitors during the summer season. Read More
