La Plata began its history with the unification of Argentina in 1880. A decision was made that if Buenos Aires was to be the capital of the new country (which it often was in one way or another even before that date), then a new capital for Buenos Aires Province needed to be created. Thus was born La Plata, south of Buenos Aires along the Río de la Plata. Construction began in 1882. Many residents in La Plata claim it is the first planned city in Argentina, which is not true, since Spain planned dozens of them, but it was the first planned city in Argentina created after independence from Spain. Part of what will strike you about this city is its large number of parks and plazas and its diagonal streets, which cut across the city creating vista points and complex intersections. Because of this urban pattern, some people nickname La Plata "the Checkerboard City." The town is centered around the enormous Plaza Moreno, whose defining features are church and state: The cathedral and the municipal palace face each other across this vast grassy expanse.
