Kenai Fjords National Park Travel Tips

  • From Exit Glacier Nature Center, several short trails lead to the foot of the glacier. The first mile of the main trail is paved and is wheelchair accessible. The pavement ends at a kiosk with benches and interpretive signs about area geology. At that point, you can continue along the main trail on a gravel path to the Glacier, or you can pass through the kiosk and follow the accessible trail to a panoramic viewpoint of Exit Glacier, the surrounding peaks, and the outwash stream.
  • Aailik Bay is a premier wilderness destination perfect for kayaking, whale-watching, and glacier viewing. Book a two- to seven-day kayaking expedition with Backcountry Safaris to paddle among icebergs, mountains, and whales.
  • The mile-deep fjords of the Kenai Peninsula are like cathedrals of rock and ice where mankind can worship the sea. Kayakers, anglers, and wildlife enthusiasts will find themselves in a state of aquatic Zen as they behold the powerful grace of orca, humpback, gray, and fin-tail whales.
  • Kenai Fjords Tours provides a handy field guide for identifying the birds and whales you'll see from the boat. You can rent binoculars to use during the cruise.
  • A public use cabin is located on the eastern shore of upper Aialik Bay, just north of Coleman Bay. Pink Salmon spawn in the lagoon behind the cabin in late August and early September and can sometimes be caught from the beach in late July.

Kenai Fjords National Park Overview

The mile-deep fjords of the Kenai Peninsula are like cathedrals of rock and ice where mankind can worship the sea—kayakers, fishermen, and wildlife enthusiasts will find themselves in a state of aquatic Zen as they behold the powerful grace of orca, humpback, gray, and fin-tail whales. The antics of smaller marine mammals such as sea otters, harbor seals, and sea lions provide comic relief. The surrounding land is a raw and frozen desert of glaciers and ice caps that invites the adventurous hiker to explore the limits of the Alaskan wilderness as well as the wilderness within.
