Denali National Park & Preserve Dog Sledding Travel Tips

  • Stay at EarthSong Lodge and join one of their four dogsledding adventures ranging from three to ten days. No prior dogsledding experience is necessary. The first day of all the dogsledding packages is a training day. The sled run on Training Day is usually a three-hour day trip out of the lodge, through a beautiful area. Guests are paired up with a guide for each sled. Afterwards each guest will drive his or her own team of four to six dogs following the guide.
  • Visit the dog kennels of Denali National Park. These sled dogs patrol some two million acres of park. Sometimes they haul supplies to designated wilderness where mechanized vehicles are prohibited. Occasionally, they transport wildlife researchers. Visitors can walk around the kennels and pet some of the dogs. The highlight of the tour is usually when six sled dogs are hooked up to a sled and an employee holds on and goes for a quick, wild ride on a loop trail.
  • Take a dogsledding tour with Mary Shields. Mary was the first woman to finish the 1,049-mile Iditarod Sled Dog Race. Mary enjoys the pure pleasure of long spring trips with her dogs, exploring the wild country of Alaska, and meeting the people who live in the "bush" communities of Alaska. She offers tours ranging in length from one to ten days.
  • Take the seven-day Iditarod Sled Dog Race Adventure tour. Spend three days learning to "mush" your own team, before witnessing the 1,100-mile Iditarod Dogsled Race from Anchorage to Nome, Alaska. After the start, you will fly by ski-equipped bush plane to a remote homestead along the Iditarod trail to wait for the overnight arrival of the first teams. The next day, you'll fly to the isolated race checkpoint at nearby Skwentna, where you’ll witness the mushers and the hundreds of dogs readying themselves for the taxing journey ahead.

Denali National Park and Preserve

Denali is truly a park on an Alaskan scale: six million acres—a plot of magnificent land larger than the state of Massachusetts—interrupted by just one road. And at that, the byway is gravel and all but closed to private vehicles. In other words, Denali sees less traffic than do many suburban streets. Read More
