  • The combination of salmon smorgasbords and unfrozen water makes the Chilkat River an eagle heaven, especially in fall and early winter, with eagle numbers peaking in November. Eagle watching is best on the flats between Haines Highway mileposts 12 and 18.
  • The annual Alaska Bald Eagle Festival in November features wildlife slideshows, classes, area tours, live raptor presentations, bus transportation to the Bald Eagle Preserve, evening entertainment, and the “flight for freedom” re-release of a bald eagle into the wild.
  • Learn more about bald eagles and the other animals that share their habitat at the American Bald Eagle Foundation Museum in Haines. Their unique wildlife dioramas represent the 48,000-acre Chilkat Bald Eagle Preserve.
  • A waterborne approach to viewing eagles is worthwhile in summer when fewer birds populate the river. Contact Chilkat River Guides to arrange a float through the preserve. The four-hour trip includes a 30-mile bus ride to the launch site and a ride back to Haines.
