Anchorage Travel Tips

  • Bundle up and head out to see the aurora borealis anytime between August and April, when the skies are dark enough to highlight the full range of color. Explore Tours runs Northern Lights photography trips from Anchorage to Talkeetna.
  • Say hello to some of Alaska's charismatic megafauna: Whale-watch aboard tour boats departing from the harbor; keep an eye out for black bears and grizzlies; and if you bring the pooch, beware—each year, wolves are responsible for several pet deaths around Anchorage.
  • Bring warm clothes. Anchorage's high temperature tops 55 degrees only five months a year (May to September).
  • Monitor seismic activity. Four active volcanoes surround the Cook Inlet that leads to Anchorage. Mount Redoubt, some 60 miles southwest of the city, erupted in January 2009.
  • Dance, hear folktales, and make crafts at the Alaska Native Heritage Center Museum in northeast Anchorage. Art classes in beading and clothes-making are held every Saturday in fall and winter.

As teenagers living in Anchorage, my cousin and I got a job from a family friend painting his lake cabin. He flew us out on his floatplane and left us there, with paint, food, and a little beer. A creek that ran past the lake was so full of salmon that we caught one on every cast until we got bored and started thinking of ways to make it more difficult. We cooked the salmon over a fire and then floated in a boat on the lake under the endless sunshine of a summer night, talking and diving naked into the clear, green water. We met some guys building another cabin one day, but otherwise we saw no other human beings. When the week was over, the cabin was painted—it didn't take long—and the floatplane came back to get us.
